The tags are embedded in the flac files. If you convert to wav you'll strip them off. Can not itunes play flac? I've never used it. I know winamp and foobar can.

itunes can't play FLAC or SHN. winamp or Foobar2000 can play FLAC or SHN just fine. I use Foobar2000 to convert FLAC to LAME MP3 at -V2 for use on my ipod (LAME -V2 is what archive uses when converting to VBR mp3). Then I have the FLAC for archive and the MP3's for portable listening.

Just used Winamp to transcode to mp3. Tags are carried over.
Elbow, I don't know what to tell you about itunes. If you can make the direct transcode to mp3 the tags will not be lost. Wav files don't have file headers to support tags.

Unfortunately itunes does not play flac. Apple has a bug up their ass about it.
